HERE'S ONE EXPLANATION OF WHY MEAT PRICES ARE GOING UP.
TODAY'S NEWS SUMMARY:

OPENING THE NEWS TODAY IS A FOCUS ON THE NATIONAL PORK BOARD WHICH LAST WEEK SAID IT DESIGNATED AN ADDITIONAL $650,000 TOWARDS RESEARCH OF THE DEADLY PORCINE EPIDEMIC DIARRHEA VIRUS THAT ENTERED THE U.S. LAST SPRING.  THE LATEST FUNDING BRINGS THE TOTAL THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNATED TOWARDS THIS DISEASE TO $1.75 MILLION SINCE LAST SUMMER. PEDV IS BELIEVED TO HAVE KILLED OVER 5 MILLION PIGS AND POSSIBLY AS MANY AS 6-7 MILLION HEAD SINCE IT WAS DISCOVERED IN THE U.S. LAST SPRING.  MOST OF THE PEDV CASES HAVE OCCURRED SINCE EARLY OCTOBER AND THE CASES COUNTS HAVE EXPANDED DURING THE WINTER MONTHS.

MEANWHILE, U.S. HOG SLAUGHTER DEFICITS TO YEAR-AGO COULD REACH DOUBLE-DIGIT LEVELS AT TIMES THIS SUMMER BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEDV CASES REPORTED SO FAR THIS WINTER.  ANALYSTS, LIVESTOCK DEALERS AND OTHER INDUSTRY SOURCES SAID WEEKLY DATA ON CONFIRMED PEDV CASES, AND IN PARTICULAR THOSE THAT AFFECTED SUCKLING PIGS, THE MOST VULNERABLE TO THE DISEASE, SUGGEST THAT MORE THAN 2 MILLION SOWS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY PEDV, WHICH COULD TRANSLATE TO PIG DEATHS LOSSES SO FAR SINCE LAST MAY IN A RANGE OF 5-6 MILLION HEAD.  THE NUMBER OF CASES GREW RAPIDLY THROUGHOUT THE FORTH QUARTER AND EXPANDED EVEN FURTHER IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY.
FYI THIS VIRUS DOES NOT AFFECT HUMANS.
